CHAPTER EIGHT

Mac

Mac sat in the overstuffed armchair and placed his mug of coffee on the side table. Shadow padded across the floorboards to lie at his feet. He bent to give her a scratch before picking up his iPhone. “Hey there,” he said when he heard Ty answer.

“Hi.”

Mac felt warmth radiating through his chest at Ty’s greeting. He could hear the smile in Ty’s voice and immediately started thinking about the last time they’d seen each other. It had been a hell of a great night. Ty knew just how to push all his buttons, and Mac’s body started to respond to the memories.

“Hello? Are you still there?”

Shit! Focus. You’re supposed to be professional.

Mac cleared his throat. “Yeah, I’m here. I was calling about starting the electrical work. I’ve had a client cancel and wondered if you wanted me to get started on the work at the pub this week.”

“Oh.”

Did he sound disappointed?

“We can keep it at next week as per the original schedule if you like,” Mac hurried to say.

“No. That’s fine. I’m just checking the calendar.” There was a short pause before Ty spoke again. “That should be fine. You’re sure we won’t have to keep the power off for long?”

“I should be able to keep the electrical outage at a minimum. Anything that looks like it’ll be longer than twenty minutes or so, I’ll make sure to do early, before you open, or hold till Monday. You’re quieter on Mondays, right?”

“Uh-huh.”

“So I’ll head out to the wholesaler to pick up the new downlights and be there this afternoon, if that’s okay?”

“Sure. Sounds good. I’ll see you after lunch sometime, then.”

“Wait a sec. Before you go, I wanted—”

“Hang on.” Mac could hear someone calling to Ty. There was muffled conversation in the background before Ty spoke again. “Sorry, delivery. Now, what were you saying?”

“If you have to go—”

“No, it’s fine. Go ahead.”

Mac cleared his throat again. “I wanted to call and say thanks. For the other night, I mean. I had a great time. I should have called before now.”

Ty’s chuckle sounded across the phone. “You didn’t have to call, but thank you. I had a great time too. I’m sorry I conked out so early before we’d even had a chance to watch the movie.”

“Don’t worry about the movie. I like the way the evening ended. Better than a movie anytime.”

Ty laughed again.

“Sorry I didn’t end up staying. I just needed to get back to my own bed, you know?”

“That’s fine, Ty. Anyway, I’m the one who should be apologising, what with stupidly taking you past the barn—”

“Hey. I already told you I’m not upset by that. It was sort of good in a way. Not something I’d like to do every day—confront my past like that—but I’m pleased I did.”

“Well, if it helped, then I’m glad too.” Mac bent and stroked his hand between Shadow’s ears. She raised her head from the rug and gave him a brief look before stretching out at his feet.

“So? This afternoon, then?”

“Yep.
